Bird tracking
Where the eagles go once they leave the nest. A record of the movements of birds tagged by the centre.
Tracks are shown with a delay and at regional scale, so as not to expose the location of active nests. Mapping: OpenStreetMap.
Why we track the birds
Fitting a bird with a transmitter answers questions no other method can reach: how far juveniles disperse, which habitats they choose, and where the risks concentrate.
For the Chaco Eagle, tracking has shown that young birds range far further than assumed, and that much of the known mortality occurs on electrical infrastructure.
